| The Drepung Loseling monks of The Mystical Arts of Tibet will create a Green Tara mandala sand painting from Sunday, February 12 to Sunday, February 19 in celebration of Losar, the Tibetan New Year. Green Tara is called upon for protection, health, happiness, wisdom, abundance and success for one’s life. Tara is the active principle of compassion, capable of bringing to fruition all activities, mundane or otherwise, that bring benefit to others as well as the principle female manifestation of enlightenment. |
| |
| The opening ceremony on February 12 will begin with introductory remarks about the mandala followed by a ceremony with the monks chanting and playing traditional Tibetan instruments to consecrate the space. After, the monks will begin constructing the mandala by drawing the geometric lines, from memory, for Green Tara in preparation for the colourful designs and ancient spiritual symbols that will appear throughout the week. |
| |
| We invite you to join us for a joyous time filled with the majesty of the growing mandala and participatory activities that are fun for the whole family. Throughout the week there will be lotus origami construction, mandala colouring pages, a community sand painting inspired by Losar’s Year of the Water Hare, a mandala puzzle, children’s meditation, and a special Creating Mandalas workshop with Susanne Fincher which will guide participants in creating and interpreting a personal mandala for insight, healing, and self-expression. |
| |
| After hundreds of man hours and millions of grains of sand laid down in the creation of this mandala over a period of seven days, it will be dismantled in a lavish ceremony on February 19. The sand will be swept away as a symbolization of impermanence and non-attachment, as well as being a tool to reconsecrate the earth and its inhabitants, to the accompaniment of traditional Tibetan musical instruments and multi-phonic chants. Attendees will be gifted half of the consecrated and blessed sand to take home as a reminder. |
| |
| Those attending the Mandala Closing Ceremony will also have an opportunity to be entered in a drawing to receive a free signed copy of Creating Mandalas: for Insight, Healing, and Self-Expression by Susanne Fincher. |
