Creating Mandalas
Mandalas are circular designs with spiritual and psychological meaning. Tibetan Buddhism has a rich, well-known history of mandala practice, but sacred circles are part of Western tradition as well. Examples include Neolithic circles of standing stones, the visionary art of Hildegard of Bingen, native American medicine wheels, labyrinths, and rose windows in Christian churches.

C.G. Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist and associate of Sigmund Freud, discovered circular drawings had psychological significance in the inner life of individuals. A student of Eastern philosophy who had a Tibetan thangka hanging in his study, Jung called the circle drawings he and his patients did mandalas, Sanskrit for sacred circle. Jung wrote that mandalas indicate “the premonition of a centre of personality, a kind of central point within the psyche, to which everything is related, by which everything is arranged, and which is itself a source of energy.” (p. 73, Mandala Symbolism, 1973)
