Dr. Pema Dorjee
Renowned Tibetan Physician

October - November 2004

Tibetan medicine is one of the oldest and most comprehensive medical systems in existence. It is a holistic philosophy that seeks to maintain the harmonious operation and balance of all the energies that constitute the human psycho-physical being. Based on the centuries-old Buddhist study of the mind, it has provided what seem to be miracle cures for diseases often considered untreatable by allopathic medicine.

Dr. Pema Dorjee

Drepung Loseling Institute is pleased to announce that Dr. Pema Dorjee, the most senior and renowned Tibetan physician practicing today, will be in residence in Atlanta in October and November 2004.

Pema Dorjee was born in 1950 in Tibet. When he was nine years old, his parents fled to India as the Chinese invaded Tibet. He completed his medical studies in 1974 under the renowned professor Dr. Barshi Phuntsok at the Men-Tsee-Khang, the Tibetan Medical and Astro Institute. A distinguished student, Dr. Dorjee was selected to complete his internship under Dr. Yeshi Dhonden, the personal physician to His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

After completing his internship, he directed various branch clinics of the Men-Tsee-Khang in Nepal, New Delhi, Dharamsala, Itanagar, Calcutta and most recently, Salugara, West Bengal. During Dr. Dorjee’s tenure at the Calcutta clinic, the Indian publication Telegraph Magazine did a cover story about his work, calling him a “Miracle Man.”

Dr. Dorjee was elected the first chairperson of the Menpa Lhentsog (Tibetan Medical Council) and for three years served as General Secretary of Men-Tsee-Khang; currently he is Technical Advisor to the Research and Development Department.

He participated in the Second International Congress on Tibetan Medicine, held in Washington, D.C. in 2003, and has been awarded various honors throughout his career, including the Gold Medal and the Gem of Alternative Medicine from the Indian Board of Alternative Medicine in recognition of his dedicated service to Tibetan medicine.

Dr. Dorjee has written two books and numerous articles on Tibetan medicine and has translated textbooks from other medical systems into Tibetan. This is his second visit to the United States.

Symposium

Mind-Body Medicine at the Interface of Mood and Health:
Tibetan Buddhist & Western Perspectives on Depression in the Medically Ill

Scientific developments over the last decade have provided increasing support for a central tenet of Tibetan Buddhist medicine: that mind and body interact with each other via bi-directional pathways to cause disease and to promote health. Drawing on Western scientific and Tibetan Buddhist perspectives, this symposium will examine these mind-body connections as they pertain to the conceptualization, diagnosis and treatment of depression in persons who are medically ill.

The Healing Art of Tibetan Medicine

The Western world has witnessed a recent explosion of interest and excitement as science is discovering the many positive and negative ways that the mind affects the body. Yet, for centuries Tibetan Buddhist medicine has operated from the paradigm that mind and body are connected.

Underlying the Tibetan system is the principle that good health is a state of balance of all the energies and related biological and chemical interactions in the human body. The therapeutic power of the mind or consciousness is highly regarded in the Tibetan system, which recognizes that the ideas and mental patterns of the individual are subtle – yet powerful – causative factors in bringing our specific health conditions into being.
