Celebrating Buddha Shakyamuni's
Enlightenment Day
Wednesday, June 11, 2025 - 5:00 am

Geshe Ngawang Phende will give one-day Mahayana precepts that entails maintaining eight vows beginning from 5:00 am until sun-rise the next morning.

Taking the Mahayana precepts and keeping the vows is considered a very special practice of observing moral discipline with Bodhicitta motivation. By engaging in this practice we acquaint ourselves with the Bodhisattva's way of life and thereby make our precious human life more meaningful.

It is believed that whatever actions we engage on this special day has the power to multiply a thousand times and thus could bring tremendous benefit both in terms of accumulation of positive merits and purification of negative activities.

The observance of the moral precepts also include taking just one meal that day.

The retreat will last approximately one hour and will be held in-person
It is recommended that you are a Buddhist practitioner to attend this practice; however, you do not need to take the refuge portion of the precepts.

A voluntary offering to the teacher and the monastery is
customary in the Buddhist tradition.

Prayer of the Precepts

From now on I shall not kill
Nor take others’ possessions.
I shall not engage in sexual activity
Nor speak false words.

I shall completely avoid alcohol, Which fosters many faults.
I shall not use great or high seats and beds, and
Likewise I shall avoid food at the wrong times,
Perfume, garlands, jewelry, and
Dancing, singing, and so on.

Just as the foe destroyers
Never kill and so on,
Likewise I shall avoid killing and so on.
May I quickly attain supreme enlightenment.
May I free this world, disturbed by much suffering,
From the ocean of existence.
