Meditation is an important technique for quieting the mind and establishing an inner basis of clarity and well-being. It allows us to relax from within the core of our spirit, and better understand the processes that make up our life. Some meditative techniques aim at strengthening inner qualities that are important life forces; others aim at eliminating inner negativities and habitual patterns.
Geshe Lobsang Tenzin, Director of Drepung Loseling Monastery Inc., will lead this daily meditation practice. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and may bring mats or cushions. FREE.

Opening the Heart: Arousing the Mind of Universal Kindness • Tuesday July 7, 2009 - 3:30 pm
The eighth century Indian master Shantideva said, “The mind of universal kindness is like the magical elixir that turns base metals into gold. It transforms an ordinary person into one on the path of growth and happiness.” Love and kindness are mental archetypes that all beings possess. The more we strengthen them, the more beneficial we become to others and ourselves. Buddhism presents numerous contemplative techniques for intensifying and enhancing these archetypes, until they achieve full maturity and universality. $10 at the door

Death & Dying: The Tibetan Tradition
• Wednesday July 8, 2009 - 3:30 pm

The subject of death and dying is sometimes thought of in the West as being negative and morbid, and as something to be ignored. However, Buddhism teaches that an understanding of the death process is important life knowledge; it enhances and enriches our life, and brings about a dramatic inner transformation. The mind moves into a deeper state of subtlety, clarity and fearlessness. $10 at the door

For the past four years, Emory University has been conducting a ground-breaking research study on the benefits of compassion meditation for depression, stress response, and immune function. Geshe Lobsang Tenzin, who designed and taught the compassion meditation for the study at Emory, will explain its medical and health benefits, and the reasons why compassion meditation may be especially relevant and powerful in modern times. Symbolism of the Sand Mandala
• Saturday July 11, 2009 - 10:30 am

The Mandala is a sacred cosmogram used as an object of contemplation. It depicts the pure nature of the world in which we live as well as how we can live most effectively. By creating a sand Mandala we bring the creative energy of that sacred dimension into our lives and attune ourselves to this natural perfection. $10 at the door
