BiLan Liao is an artist, educator, author, and speaker. The Coming into Tibet series of paintings are part of BiLan’s book Diary of the Dragon’s Daughter. She traveled to Tibet on three separate occasions finding the inspiration for her art.
BiLan painted the story of her journey and her family living through the years of the dark and difficult times under the Communist China of Mao Zedong. The book Diary of the Dragon’s Daughter has three parts: Life in Chinese Communist Mao Era, Life in Chinese New Communist Era, and Life in America. There are 254 pages with over 500 images and 50 color pages. She is often compared to Ann Frank who wrote her story about Hitler during WWII.
In 1999, BiLan was granted permanent residency in the United States under the category “Alien of Extraordinary Abilities.” She left a successful career in China as an artist to fulfill her American dream of freedom. She came to America not knowing how to speak English and took service positions as a dishwasher, seamstress, and many others. She became an American citizen and earned two master’s degrees in art to become an art professor. She now dedicates herself full time to her art, the making of a documentary, and a feature film about her amazing journey.
