| Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion, is perhaps one of the most deeply cherished deities in the Buddhist world. Known as Quan Am in Vietnamese, Kwan Yin in Chinese, Kannon in Japanese, and Chenrezig in Tibetan, Avalokiteshvara’s manifestations are manifold. One of the most pervasive forms is one with one thousand arms and one thousand eyes which signify his infinite compassion; that is, his ability to see the suffering of sentient beings and his resolve to relieve that suffering. |
|
| Recognizing this resolve, Buddhists have relied on Avalokiteshvara’s blessings for millennia, finding solace and relief in times of emotional and physical illness and societal turmoil. The transformative potential of Avalokiteshvara is perhaps best exemplified by the story of Bhikshuni Laxmi, a 11th century Buddhist nun. Her devoted practice and sincere reliance on Avalokiteshvara resulted not only in her full recovery from leprosy, but also her complete enlightenment within her lifetime. Blessings transmitted through an empowerment activate the recipient’s potential for positive transformation as one engages in the practices related to that deity. |

Receiving this empowerment fulfills a prerequisite for Drepung Loseling’s annual Nyung Ne retreat. |

His Eminence Sharpa Choeje Rinpoche |
 |
| |
One of the greatest masters of his generation, His Eminence Khensur Lobsang Dorjee, was enthroned as Sharpa Choeje by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 2016. As Sharpa Choeje, Rinpoche will ascend to the position of Gaden Tripa, the Supreme Head of the Geluk Lineage at the conclusion of the current Gaden Tripa’s term. When he becomes the 105th throne holder, Rinpoche will join a lineage of distinguished masters spanning six centuries—the successors to the founder of the Geluk lineage, the great 14th century master Je Tsongkhapa, widely venerated as an emanation of Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom. Entirely merit-based, Rinpoche’s preeminent positions of leadership reflect his extraordinary scholarship and a lifetime of spiritual accomplishment including extensive retreats focused on the practice of lam rim and highest yoga tantras. |
 |
| |
Rinpoche was born in Eastern Tibet in 1937 and joined Drepung Loseling Monastery in Lhasa at the age of seven. One of a handful of great teachers left from his generation, Drepung Loseling Monastery, Inc. is delighted to request Rinpoche to provide spiritual guidance and support to dharma students in North America. It is indeed an exceedingly rare and precious opportunity to receive teachings and initiations from such an esteemed master practitioner and scholar. |
